New remote gambling act put to the test

Singapore flexed its muscle under the country's recently introduced remote gambling act (see previous reports) this past weekend busting an alleged online gambling ring reported to have received bets of around S$3 million over a two week period.

According to Singapore Police, 11 people were arrested in connection with the allegations along with the seizure of S$215,000, betting and bank transaction records, laptops and mobile phones.

Simultaneous raids were launched by the Singapore Criminal Investigation Department on Sunday in the Newton Hougang, Tiong Bahru, Balestier, Tanjong Pagar and Woodlands areas.

"Police are determined to stamp out unlawful remote gambling and will continue to take tough enforcement actions against those who flout the law," commented the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Investigations and Intelligence) in a press statement.

Under Singapore's new remote gambling law the suspects may face up to five years imprisonment and/or a fine ranging between S$20 000 and S$200 000 if convicted.
