Growing numbers of online punters access their pastime on the go.
A new study, conducted by Kantar Sport GB Syndicated Online Gambling Research and referenced on mobilecasinofaq.com
, has confirmed the ascendency of mobile over desktop gambling devices, revealing that the number of exclusively desktop (PC and laptop) punters in Q2-2013 has declined to just 49% this year when compared with the same period last year (Q2-2012: 67 percent).
Over half of online gamblers are now additionally or exclusively using mobile devices - 51% in Q2-2013 compared to 33% in Q2-2012.
The use of smartphones for gambling rose from 7% of mobile users last year to 15% this year.
The number of punters using tablet devices continued to grow, with 23% of respondents confirming they used tablets to have a flutter as an additional way to access the internet, and 5% saying they used only their tablets to place bets in Q2-2013.
Respondents who said they used desktop, smartphones and tablets as multiple channels for their wagering activities doubled from 5% to 10 percent.
From the industry perspective, William Hill
plc is probably the most successful gambling company in leveraging the mobile vertical, reporting that its mobile user demographic profile has closed the gap on desktop and is 87% male, with most aged between 18 and 34 years.
Sports betting continues to dominate the mobile space although there is a marked increase in the number of punters playing casino games. For a list of online operators currently offering mobile casino games, please see the mobile casinos list
