Almost US$ 30 million involved, claim police

Two online gambling rings in the Pudong New Area and Jing'an District of China have been broken up by police actions that included the arrest of 99 people, reports the Shanghai Daily newspaper.

Shanghai police spokesmen said that the criminal enterprises involved more than 180 million yuan (US$29.31 million), and revealed that a total of 54 computers were seized.

Three men were named as agents working for a foreign gambling website, the identity of which was not disclosed. The trio and their secondary agents earned 5% of the amount gambled by the people they lured to the website.

The police were also active in shutting down a land gambling operation in Putuo District concealed behind a front company titled Zegui Electric Co. The company was selling illegal gambling machines, 22 of which were seized, and seven persons arrested.
