Police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission discuss blocking 'undesirable' foreign websites

Malaysian police have built up a 'zero tolerance' reputation when it comes to illegal internet gambling in the country, but they appear to be planning to ratchet enforcement up a gear, according to reports from the Bernama news agency.

In collaboration with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, the police are reportedly considering a plan to block internet sites offering undesirable and illegal activities to Malaysians, including online gambling operations.

Datuk Abdul Jalil Hassan, the Assistant Director (Secret Societies, Gambling and Vice) told the agency that the move to set up the enforcement plan was imperative to curb gambling syndicates from becoming more active.

He revealed that the evolving plan will see the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission identifying any website that could 'cause unhealthy activities' in the country, blocking it immediately and coordinating with the police.

"Based on police surveillance, most of the international gambling sites detected are from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan," the official observed. "However, the police are facing difficulties in shutting down the operations because they are operated from countries which legalise gambling activities."
