Latest research shows that over 2 million Europeans now use mobiles to make sports bets
The respected and independent research organisation Juniper Research reports that the European mobile gambling sector has enjoyed a surge in growth, with over 2 million sports book customers now using mobile phones to place wagers.
The release of user friendly browser-based apps designed specifically for the iPhone and Android operating systems has led to the dramatic increase in wagers, researchers found. Apple's decision to allow specialist apps from the likes of Betfair
and PaddyPower in its Apps Story (see previous reports) has also boosted visibility for the sector and offers a potentially lucrative new delivery channel for providers.
International events like the 2010 World Cup football in South Africa this year have given mobile-savvy operators a boost, with Ladbrokes
reporting 100 000 mobile bets during the competition.
Report author Dr Windsor Holden says the last twelve months have provided optimal growth conditions for mobile gambling services. "With the growth in consumer smartphone adoption, mobile users are becoming far more comfortable with m-commerce in general, and gambling companies are benefiting from this greater affinity," she observes.
User numbers are expected to rise by more than 60% by the end of 2010.
Other findings from the Mobile Gambling Markets report include:
In 2009 much of the mobile gambling action was generated from the iPAT service in Japan.
The US is likely to become a key market in the medium term with the launch of mobile lottery services from 2011 onwards
