Local council objects to 270 ft 'Hollywood' promotional structure
Online bookie Paddy Power's plans to establish a dominating presence overlooking the Ryder Cup golf competition received a setback this week when the company was ordered to remove a giant 270 ft promotional sign.
The Mail Online reports that the local Monmouthshire County Council objected to the Hollywood-style signage overlooking the Ryder Cup venue at Celtic Manor, and was backed by the Cardiff County court.
A disappointed Paddy Power spokesman said: "We are clearly the victims of bureaucratic bullies and rich golf course owners but we will respect the verdict of the court. I guess it's a textbook case of - we fought the law and the law won."
Celtic Manor Resort owner Sir Terry Matthews was reportedly furious at the way Paddy Power tried to deflect attention away from the official Ryder Cup sponsors.
"It's just disgraceful that genuine backers of the event can be usurped in such a fashion," he said.
However, the bookie company remains unrepentant, and is now exploiting the situation by offering odds on where the sign will appear next.
